Overspill: stories from Manchester's overspill estates

This image is of a tennis court and shows a cloudy sky above.

We are delighted to have been awarded £63,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to deliver the Overspill project..

The project, which runs from January 2019 to June 2020, will deliver a busy programme of activities, workshops and interviews to identify and record the memories and experiences of the people who moved from the Manchester slums to the overspill estates in the 1950’s and 1960’s. It will also deliver activities that better explain and interpret this heritage to new audiences. The project will produce:

-       a book, film and website

-       three exhibitions (Darnhill, Langley and The People’s History Museum, Manchester)

-       12 oral history interviews and archive material

-       local history resources for primary schools / train teaching staff

-       dementia reminiscence resource and training for care providers

We have also received a total of £4,000 in match funding from our partners at Guinness Partnership and Riverside Housing and are being supported by Archives + based in Central Library, Manchester.

Please visit the project website– www.overspillmcr.org – for further project details, information about events and to read the stories shared so far. There is also space to share your own overspill stories here too.
